Distinguished and Famous people from The Central Coast

🎭 Spike Milligan

Comedian and writer Spike Milligan developed a lasting connection with Woy Woy after his parents settled there. His visits produced affectionate jokes about the place, but he also supported local theatre and environmental campaigns, including efforts to protect Riley Island and Henry Kendall's cottage. Woy Woy Library's exhibition preserves recordings, photographs and family memorabilia. The association is more substantial than a passing celebrity visit: family life, local friendships and public advocacy all helped tie a performer best known for absurdity to some very practical Central Coast causes.

📚 Biddy Tuxworth

Biddy Tuxworth was born Hilda Elsie Phegan at Woy Woy in 1908. Nursing and family life later took her to several places before she settled at Tennant Creek in 1951. There she interviewed older residents, collected photographs and documents with Marjorie Fullwood, and wrote Tennant Creek: Yesterday and Today. She also helped save a former hospital building that became a museum and archive. Woy Woy is her birthplace, before the Northern Territory community work for which she became celebrated. Her story shows how a nurse’s interest in the people around her developed into a substantial contribution to preserving local memory.
